how many needles does it take to sew a messenger bag?

i've been wanting to sew up a messenger bag for ages, and since i got my new laptop, i've really wanted on so i could take it around with me!  this weekend i nabbed some time for myself in my sewing room.  i haven't sewn anything in ages and it felt so nice.  for this particular project, i used some pretty heavy fabric and i broke 3 needles in the process!

just look though....wasn't it totally worth it?

i used a couple of different tutorials for this and i added the ruffle to the front.  i wish i would have added a pocket on the inside and i sat at the table trying to decide if i wanted to do more cutting when i was so far into it.  i didn't, and now i'm thinking i made the wrong choice?

i did make a small error which i'll have to rip and restitch.  i blame the way the flap is sewn onto the bag.  in my mind, it seems like i could do it better (you know, design a better way to put it all together) but, that's easier said than done....

overall, i love it!  it's  just what i was going for.  something soft and pretty.  it isn't perfect, but it's my first time sewing a bag like this.  even my  husband said it looked well made!

materials:
i used some dropcloth left over from sewing slipcovers for my couch and some pretty fabric i found at jo ann's for the lining/ruffles.

happy monday girls!

CUTE bag! Love it! I've been looking for a lot of the tutorials, but I'm kind of a sucker when it comes to EASY tutorials, so if one looks too tough, I always just move on. Haha!

Too bad about your broken needles. That is so frustrating. But, agree it was totally worth it! Very cute!
